Jan has been involved in music her entire life. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Michigan. Since then, she has taught elementary music, directed church adult, youth and children’s choirs, and played organ and piano for church services. She is presently an Alto Section leader with the Detroit Concert Choir and has traveled with them winning top awards in Spain, Austria, Italy and Wales. This is Jan’s 3rd year with the Royal Oak Children’s Choir. She has been the Assistant Director and Accompanist and is presently the Director. She is now retired from the position as choir accompanist in the Royal Oak Schools, a position she held for 25 years. Jan has also been the Vocal Director for many of the high school musicals and was Vocal Director for “Thoroughly Modern Millie” with Stagecrafters in Royal Oak.

Susan (Paree) Behrens
Co Director, and Founder of The Royal Oak Children's Choir

Susan began her studies in voice
and harp as a student at Southfield-Lathrup High
School. Upon graduation from Indiana University
with a degree in Vocal Music Education and a harp
minor, she was hired to teach choral/vocal music
for Royal Oak Public Schools. In her nineteen year
tenure with the school district she has taught vocal
music at all levels. While pursuing graduate studies
in Vocal Performance at Oakland University, Ms.
Paree directed a youth and children’s choir at Detroit’s
Metropolitan United Methodist Church. She also served
as substitute director for the Chancel Choir and
substitute soprano soloist. In 1995 Susan began
a new experience in contemporary Christian music
as first soprano and substitute director for the
Spirit Singers at First United Methodist Church
of Northville. A professional harpist and private
voice instructor, Susan has also performed with
professional and community theatre and choral groups
including the Southfield Madrigal Choral, Opera
Lite, Grosse Pointe Theatre, Birmingham Village
Players and Royal Oak’s Stagecrafters.
